Three Tamron Lenses On Their Way!

  By Ryley Smith

Time to get excited for some new lenses! Tamron is releasing not one, not two, but three close-focusing fixed focal lenses for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The first two to be released November 20th are the 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 and 35mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2. Then the third lens, 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2, will be released in January 2020. Let’s bring back the joy and fun of fixed focal-lenses with these awesome new Tamron lenses.

Let’s look a little closer at these lenses. The first lens in this line up has a 20mm focal length, to fully explore the world of ultra wide-angles. The second has a 24mm focal length, the perfect general-purpose wide-angle lens. Then we have the versatile 35mm focal length that is ideal for every day/every subject use. Least to say, Tamron gave us a brilliant assortment of fixed-focal lenses for all kinds of shooting scenarios!

Now, Tamron worked hard to bring back the excitement of fixed-focal lenses which includes making these lenses with incredible focus potential. The 20mm, 24mm and 35mm have a MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.11m, 0.12m and 0.15m (4.3, 4.7 and 5.9 inches), which translates to crazy close-up! In addition, the maximum magnification ratio for all three lenses is 1:2, allowing for users to create compositions that really emphasize perspective. This combination elevates these lenses since they give users an exceptional amount of creative freedom and opportunity.

With creative opportunity comes logistics. All three of these lenses have the same length of 64mm (2.5 in). That means that these compact lenses are also exceptionally light. Weighing in at 220g for the 20mm, 215g for the 24mm and 210g for the 35mm, a combined total of 645g (less than 1.5 pounds), photographers don’t have to choose which lens to bring, just bring them all!

Then, of course, there is image quality! With Tamron’s sophisticated optical formula along with the latest lens design technologies, these three lenses have exceptionally high rendering performance from edge to edge. This is because of the optimal arrangement of LD (Low Dispersion) and GM (glass-moulded aspherical) lens elements. Of course, these lenses also have Tamron’s legendary BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating which reduces ghosting and flare. This makes these lenses perfect for many different applications from casual family moments to serious professional photography.

Tamron also upgraded the AF drive system, which employs an OSD to ensure quiet operation. This greatly reduces the noise, while vastly improving the AF performance and speed. Now that is a double win! Overall, this fixed focal lens series provides superlative AF precision for exact focus even when shooting moving subjects, as well as outstanding accuracy and tracking capability.

To make these lenses practical on top of being functional, they have multiple seals around the mount and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or raindrops. They also added Moisture-Resistant Construction, which provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. The front surface of the lens element is coated with a fluorine compound to help protect against water and oil.

All three of Tamron’s new fixed focal lenses are compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to certain mirrorless cameras (features vary by camera). These include the following:

  • Fast Hybrid AF
  • Eye AF
  • Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
  • In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion)
  • Camera-based lens unit firmware updates

Keep checking in! More information will be coming soon, and get ready as the 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 and 35mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 are being released on November 20th! The 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 will be released in January 2020.
