The Leica Legacy Continues: The New Leica SL2

  By Ryley Smith

Another legendary camera has stepped into the spotlight, from Leica Camera, the new Leica SL2. With an established design based on the Leica SL, along with improved performance, refined ergonomics and streamlined controls, a milestone in the history of Leica. It’s your choice, get ready to be elevated.

Built off of the established design of the Leica SL, the Leica SL2 is the next step in creating a perfect, beautifully designed camera for various types of shooting. Keeping with Leica’s history, the overall look of the SL2 is inspired by the Leicaflex SL and Leica R3/R4, with only a few tweaks to fit the needs and desires of current users. This consists of improved ergonomics and contours of the camera to provide users with a more secure grip and overall increased comfortability. The Leica SL2 also has highly upgraded weather-sealing, giving it an IP54-rating, meaning it can always perform, regardless of the harsh environment.

The most significant improvements of the SL2 are hidden inside the camera, including a newly developed 47 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. Alongside an ISO range of 50 – 50,000, the SL2 gives photographers all the resolution they need while still maintaining high speeds and versatile low-light shooting. This also includes Body Image Stabilization (BIS), which offers up to 5.5 stops of stabilization with any lens, allowing steadier stills and video, even with slower shutter speeds.

Speaking of both stills and video, the Leica SL2 was intended to have excellent video capabilities. It can record in 4K across the full sensor, with 4K up to 60 fps, a cropped 5K mode, built-in 3.5mm headphone
and mic jacks and 10-bit quality direct to card. It also can be set to Cine Mode, specifically designed for videographers, to allow optimal high-level workflow.

With a simplified interface and control scheme, the menu functions for Photo and Video are separated by a graphical interface to make it easy and clear as to which one you are in. This also makes navigation between and within each function straightforward.

Improving off the high-performance standard of the Leica SL, the SL2 has a newly upgraded 5.76 million dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). This provides even better colour accuracy and higher contrast with more resolution and sharpness, rendering the highest quality viewing and composing experience through a Leica lens.

The SL2 also comes with advanced contrast-detect face and body detection, to track moving subjects and maintain pinpoint accuracy. With intelligent-AF (iAF), the user can focus on still subjects, then begin tracking them once they start to move. This, of course, can be adjusted depending on the behaviour of the subject being tracked.

Last, but certainly not least, one of the final note-worthy features of the Leica SL2 is the option to turn off Long Exposure Noise Reduction. This allows photographers to work quicker when taking long-exposure images.

The new Leica SL2 will be available on November 21st, 2019, pre-order yours now!
