The book is what it says it is, avoiding the glut of self-help that plagues the “how-to” market. The Filmmaker’s Handbook is how to how-to. It is intelligently written throughout, and the examples and selections that Pincus and Ascher make are subtly and gracefully chosen; there is brilliance in using a sublime still of Anna Karina in Jean Luc Godard’s Vivre sa Vie to expound on the possible virtue lens flare, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a philosophically dense topic like persistence of vision addressed at all, not to mention so deftly.

“Lately, I read Stephen Shore’s “The Nature of Photographs” and I foundit hypnotic. I think everyone interested in photography should read it.
Shore is a master educator on the subject of photography, and his
insights on focus and the frame have so much more to do with
mindfulness, and the transmutation of consciousness. I shouldn’t say too
much and blow the magic of it.”
