New Nikon Firmware Expected May 16th

  By Kaitlyn Kerr

Nikon has confirmed that a new firmware update for their Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras will be released on May 16th, 2019. Though full details of the firmware update have yet to be announced, they have indicated that an eye-detection autofocus capability will be included.

Eye-detection autofocus is something we’ve seen in Canon, Panasonic, Fuji, and Sony cameras and will be a welcome addition to Nikon’s full frame mirrorless lineup. As a step beyond face-detect, eye-detect ensures that your focus is critically locked on your subject’s eye, framing it with a smaller box to indicate which eye is in focus. This improves your hit rate and is one more tool to help you get the shot.
