Louie Villanueva’s “Ten Thousand Cups of Tea” links a considerate grammar of image-making to his pleasing aesthetic, self-assuredly defying reduction. His photographs excite me, probably because I don’t exactly understand them. I am far too literal, Louie is subtle and complicated, confident, and his pictures exhibit a range of emotions that an elder voice in our community referred to as poetic. I am challenged by a picture of a bumper sticker in this book that asks the witness to “honk if you know that you don’t exist”. The dyad of possibilities puts me at odds with what may be Lou’s way of looking at things, given that I am hard as stone on the issue, like Dr. Johnson’s famous “appeal to the stone” (big fan). All’s that I know is I sure as heck love these photos, and I am proud to sell this book at the store. And I own a copy of it. I am privileged to be able to ask Louie some questions about this work. So, I sent some questions:
Nikon has released their newest full-frame, mirrorless camera! The innovative, feature-rich Nikon Z5! Designed for emerging photographers, the Z5 offers a lot of power and capabilities at an attractive price, empowering the next generation to begin their journey with the confidence to learn and grow as creators!
Sigma has done it again! They’ve announced the newest addition to their Contemporary lens lineup, the new SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary! Available in both Sony E-mount and L-mount, this lightweight and compact lens provides beautifully smooth and easy ultra-telephoto shooting, exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras.
If you’re looking for another photographic project, DP Review’s latest Youtube video with renowned photographer, Don Komarechka, should be next on your list. If you know who Don is, you’ll already know that this is a macro project, but shaking things up, this is abstract photos with polarized crystals! With just a few household items, some patience, and a steady hand, you can take beautiful, colourful, abstract images all from the comfort of home! Then, once our world is healthy again, we will have Don back in Calgary to teach some more amazing macro workshops in person!
If your kids are interested in photography but you don’t want to hand over your own camera or smartphone, the Nikon Coolpix W100 is the perfect kid’s camera available at The Camera Store.
Our in-stock refurbished Nikon Coolpix W100 cameras are only $89 (with free shipping or curbside pick-up). This camera is rugged, waterproof and built with kids in mind with large easy to press buttons, and a fun easy to use menu system. I love that my preschooler can roam freely snapping photos and videos around the house, and in the backyard.
