The book is what it says it is, avoiding the glut of self-help that plagues the “how-to” market. The Filmmaker’s Handbook is how to how-to. It is intelligently written throughout, and the examples and selections that Pincus and Ascher make are subtly and gracefully chosen; there is brilliance in using a sublime still of Anna Karina in Jean Luc Godard’s Vivre sa Vie to expound on the possible virtue lens flare, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a philosophically dense topic like persistence of vision addressed at all, not to mention so deftly.
