Earlier this year I was offered the unprecedented opportunity to show work that I’d been doing for a decade at the Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito, California. The Bay Model is a spectacular 1.5-acre indoor hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay. Opened in 1957, this giant model of the Bay was used to evaluate plans to dam or otherwise alter the Bay until digital computers took over this task around the year 2000. Today it is an educational attraction. It also has a wonderful, high ceiling exhibit hall that has become the major public art gallery for Marin County, the county just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Do you know what speed skating, dancers and dogs, Todd Korol, Sony and The Camera Store all have in common? The Sony Be Alpha event! One incredible Sunday of photographing at the Olympic Oval, thanks to Sony. What better way to celebrate the last day of summer than to shoot in the hot sun, with the leaves changing colour, super talented dancers and absolutely adorable dog models, then cooling down inside the Oval to watch an incredibly fast long track speed skating competition. It was a jam-packed day, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of how awesome it was!

This however, can also be the most daunting. As with many things in life, it is easy to get stuck in your comfort zone, limiting your potential and sacrificing your imagination. One photographer who will not confine his inspiration or limit himself to any particular label, who fully embraces total creative freedom, and truly believes in visual storytelling, is Dave Brosha.

On July 6, I went out with Scott Malo and Alvin Paringit to photograph the streets of Calgary, and the exhibition grounds of the Calgary Stampede, along with a group of others who were interested to learn, and go out in a group to shoot. We started out stymied by a voracious Alberta storm, so in good spirits tucked into a neighbourhood pub for an excellent butter chicken, and a good talk about street photography. The photographers began first in our shop, showing images that they have produced at the Stampede. Both using many of the same techniques to capture, they went quickly through their images, concentrating less on the varieties of different cameras, lenses, or shooting styles, but focusing more on editing, and selection.
